SAN LUIS VALLEY - Today there has been a notable increase in our positive case numbers. Alamosa County Public Health Department is currently investigating an outbreak of COVID-19 at the Colorado Mushroom Farm which has resulted in 11 new positive test results confirmed today.  Because COVID-19 is a new virus, everyone, regardless of workplace, age, or other factors, is potentially vulnerable to infection. Please continue to follow public health recommendations to prevent the spread of disease.

Why is wearing a cloth mask important?

Early in this pandemic, health officials discouraged the general public from using medical-grade masks, which were in short supply and are most effective for front-line healthcare workers who are trained in their use.

In light of more recent information, health officials now recommend wearing non-medical cloth masks or face coverings when you need to leave home. Wearing a cloth mask is more effective at preventing disease transmission between yourself and another person than not wearing anything. Although it may be distasteful to think we personally may be carriers of disease and not know it, it happens. Wearing a mask or face covering protects other people, particularly vulnerable people, such as an elderly parent or a friend recovering from cancer, from contracting COVID-19 and ending up in the hospital or dying. Other people wearing masks protect you. Gloves add an extra layer of protection for the wearer.

A large part of our population in the SLV is over 65 years of age. Our older generations have done a lot for us, and are beloved family members in the community. Let’s respect and honor them by protecting them.

The proper way to wear a mask or face covering is outlined below:

  • Wash your hands with soap and water

  • Tie the mask on or loop it around your ears, depending on the design

  • Do not touch the fabric on the front of the mask while you are wearing it

  • Remove it from behind without touching the fabric

  • Throw it in the laundry and wash your hands immediately after removing it

On Monday we shared some information about testing in the San Luis Valley which prompted some questions from the public. As of today, there have been 417 COVID-19 test samples from San Luis Valley residents. There are  27 tests currently pending results. From the completed tests and resulting investigations, we have identified 43 positive cases of COVID-19. Of those, 21 have completed their isolation period and have been free of symptoms for more than 72 hours. There have been 2 deaths. We do not know how many people may have been affected but not tested. Numbers are updated every weekday at http://www.slvemergency.org/slv-covid-19/
